A volunteer program exists for maintaining the iconic Royal Coast Track which runs for 26km, starting at Bundeena in the north to Otford in the south.
The track has been split into multiple sections which allow various community organisations, including Friends, to adopt a particular section of the track to focus on bush trimming, weed control plus minor surface works to repair erosion in sections where the raised boardwalk is not yet in place.
Because the Royal Coast Track runs mainly along the coastline, as its name suggests, it is particularly exposed to the forces of nature. The very high visitor numbers further impact the track quality in some places on this unique and spectacular Sydney-region walk.
Volunteer involvement in maintaining these sections is currently set to 4 or 5 times a year, normally in the cooler season and when visitation rates drop off..
Because we travel slowly, we often come across unusual plants, birds and even whales !
